This is a dual post, it's the photo of the month as well as a Finn update. I get requests all the time for "Finn updates" and while I could post once a day about him, because he's so adorable and always doing something worthy of making me laugh, the truth is, I'm a family, child, high-school senior and boudoir photographer and so I'm not going to be posting Finn updates too often (although he could have his own blog with all of his antics and high-jinx.)

Please enjoy this image of him playing with his morning playmate before taking a nap. "Squirrly" as I affectionately call him (menace that he is) will wait for Finn almost every day. He will stare right at me until I notify Finn that he's here and waiting to play, unless Finn noticed himself.

During the snow days of January, I had 10-inches of snow up here! I wasn't able to get out for about four days, so what does a photographer to do that was waiting for snow sessions and then couldn't get out?

Get on Pinterest of course! I love Pinterest for inspiration and ideas, it's a great place for me to work with a client and collaborate on concepts. One night I found this little DIY project for a fun and creative window treatment and since I have so many windows in my home I decided to try it, because I think it would make a fun backdrop for boudoir or seniors.

I must admit, as I was making these snow strings, I thought, this project is for someone with a lot of time on their hands... but in the end it was worth it and I can't wait to try these with a client!

Bellevue Photographer | Resiliency: The follow up

Here's the follow up to last night's post. I was quite concerned about this tree, but look at the difference a day makes! I was ready to cut this tree down yesterday! I'm so glad I didn't, I learned so much through this experience,which is a metaphor for life; patience, resilience and a hope. I will always think about this tree the next time I'm struggling, it will be a good reminder for me that with a little patience and hope, things will be just fine. I'm resilient too.

This is quite a departure from shooting seniors, boudoir, families or children. My goodness, initially I thought that the news was going overboard, but as it's worked out, this has turned into quite a snow and ice storm. I have a tree in my backyard that was causing me a fair amount of worry yesterday. As you can see in the first image, well... you can't see it, which is how it's supposed to be, but as the day progressed I noticed this large blob blocking my otherwise pretty view to the forest on the back of my property. As the day went on, it dropped a few feet and another few feet until this morning it was on the ground!

If this tree were to snap, it was not is not in danger of hitting my home or shed, but it would be a very big mess for me to clean up! I've learned that it's very hard to imagine how heavy a "seemingly" small limb weighs and this is a cedar tree!

I try to find the lessons in everything that comes my way, but today I was grateful that I had a the experience of watching every stage of this tree in it's descent to the snowy ground below. It reminded me how we all need a soft place to land and with family and good friends, we are all resilient and can bounce back just as this tree is going to bounce back (I hope.) It hasn't broken yet! It may have a permanent bend and be crippled for a while, but over time, I believe it will bounce back.

I like to try personal photography projects. I keep a list all year long and when I get the chance, or a free afternoon I dive right in. This is was my first attempt shooting water drops. Clearly I have a ways to go to perfect this technique; it certainly was challenging, but I did yield some pretty interesting images.

This one in particular is a favorite, because the water splash looks like a dolphin breaking the surface of the water. Do you see this too?

My sister-in-law and brother host Thanksgiving each year andmy sister-in-law has a wonderful tradition. This one has been a frequent visitor to my yard the past month. I was working in my office and caught the color of this bobcat out of the corner of my eye. I always have my camera ready and captured this face shot! If I my head wasn't buried in front of dual monitors working on post production, I would have noticed how quiet it was outside my office window, no bunnies, squirrels, or chipmunks, which I see all day long, but they all disappear when a bobcat is in their midst.

I adore this family and if it were up to me, I would squish and kiss up those cheeks on Mr. D. throughout the session, he's just that cute and when he smiles, his eyes light up and everyone around him! I just have to say that Baby A.'s mother did, (what I'm sure) was a lot of work to host her daughter's first birthday party. There was not one detail overlooked, right down to the beautiful handmade cards which labeled the variety of sandwiches served and the decorations were outstanding! See the yellow flower balls hanging from the ceiling? She made those too! She's a loving, patient and attentive mother to both her daughters and hubby.

A good time had by all!

Cormorant

They are coastal rather than oceanic birds, and some have colonised inland waters - the original ancestor of cormorants seems to have been a fresh-water bird, judging from the habitat of their most ancient lineage. They range around the world, except for the central Pacific islands.

They are fish-eaters, dining on small eels, fish, and even water snakes. They dive from the surface, though many species make a characteristic half-jump as they dive, presumably to give themselves a more streamlined entry into the water. Under water they propel themselves with their feet. Some cormorant species have been found, using depth gauges, to dive to depths of as much as 45 metres.

As promised, I would share what I saw in this snowflake. This was fun and it was great to see the responses. A couple people also thought it looked like a standard poodle, which I can also see :) A Pegasus was one guess--brilliant!

What I saw was a deer, speicifically a reindeer!

Finn is doing well! He's grown so much, he's not a kitten anymore, he's a "big boy" weighing in at a healthy 13 pounds! I've been wondering what it would be like if I rescued another kitten??? I don't think Finn would like it one bit and I don't need another cat, I was just thinking with Spring right around the corner and sessions booking, it might be nice for him to have some company.

He has a real routine he's settled into these days. I can bank on his "nap-time" just as I can bank on "the late at night crazy hour." Thankfully, he has adapted well to my schedule and isn't roaming around the house at night, meowing and keeping me awake.

Last weekend, I replaced six of his favorite toys, they're all the same and he loves batting and chasing them all around the house. I walked into the room and said, "Look! Here's all your favorites and they're brand new!" He was so excited, he didn't know which one to go after, but true to form, when I woke up the next morning, five of the six toys were either in his food dish, or right next to it.

He's pretty settled into a routine and I don't think he'd be very happy to share the run of the house, his toys, or my attention at this point. I was thinking that a new addition might help Finn be more social with visitors, however, this could really backfire on me and they both could end up being "hiders" and I don't want that!

I don't need two anti-social scaredy cats (excuse the pun.)

For now, he's quite content playing with visitors that come to our window every morning :)

Morning visitors...

Yesterday morning I was working in my office and had a visitor. It's so rare not to see a family of deer, but lately this one doe just comes alone.

She spent quite a while hanging out and poking around sliding glass doors and my office window until the squirrel startled her and off she went.

She was having a little trouble initially getting the apple I'd set out for her the night before, but she finally got a hold of it and was able to have a nice snack before moving on.

Finn update: One-year ago today, I rescued this little one...

Every UPS or Fed Ex envelope from the photo labs has little chew marks on the corners.

He loves to have his favorite toys around, or in his food dish... all eight of them!

When he wants to play, he will often wrap his front arms around my leg when I'm walking (we're still working on this one...)

He's become good friends with the squirrel that sits next to the window in my office every morning.

He makes me laugh out loud at least once a day with his antics and for that alone, I love him to pieces!

He is a real joy and both he, and I could not have been luckier one-year ago today...

Living where I do, I encounter lots of little creatures, some that I am afraid of, some I am used to having around. On Friday, I showed up at my nephews house at just the right time! He pleaded with me to please come up to his room and catch a grasshopper for him. "Catch a grasshopper???" I don't even care to pick up their guinea pig!

It's amazing what one will do for a child they love as their own. I didn't even think about it, I felt like mama bear aunty to the rescue! As a result of my good deed and being "hero" for the day I was able to get a nice photograph out of it too :)

By Request: Another Finn update!

If you've been following the "Finn updates" then you know that unless you follow my blog you will never--EVER see Finn. I rescued him from the Feral Rescue Cat Project last November and he is terrified of people. I am asked regularly by those that know me, or follow the blog how he's doing?

He's doing GREAT!

He has a definite schedule... He wakes up when I wake up, which usually brings me straight into my office to work and naturally this is the time he's into everything. His favorite thing to do is watch the birds, squirrels, rabbits and chipmunks from my office window (occasionally jumping in the air quite high believing he might actually catch one of the birds) and when that becomes mundane, he's trying to crawl into camera bags, play with camera bag shoulder straps or nestle himself into my print sample basket.

I always stop and take some time to play with him and give him my full attention once a day and then at 11:30 a.m. each morning he naps for four hours and that's when (if I'm not out shooting a session) I go into my office and work for FOUR uninterrupted blissful hours.

BUT... I'm not complaining, he's a joy to have and makes me laugh out loud at least once a day :)

It's Fall and mushrooms are sprouting up everywhere!

Three days ago, I stumbled upon what I thought was a unique looking mushroom. I hadn't seen a mushroom in MY yard with such a long stem (Image on the left is from day one.)

The next day I'd forgotten about the mushroom, was back in the equipment room, turned around and couldn't believe my eyes! The cap of the mushroom had doubled in size! (Image in the middle is from day two.)

This morning, back out there again (yes, there's a never-ending list of duties to do around here ;) This time I couldn't miss the mushroom, in less than 24-hours the cap opened up flat. All this took place in just under 72-hours!

I didn't see the little bug on the first day until I saw the images on the computer--a nice little bonus!

By Request: The Ever Elusive Finn Update

Thank you to all of those who ask about Finn and want to see recent photos of him. For those who are reading this for the first time...

I rescued Finn Thanksgiving weekend of 2009 from a feral rescue project. He's a hider! I've never had a cat that didn't come out and greet guests in my home, which is why I get asked about him often (which is appreciated :)

Finn now weighs 11-1/2 pounds. He's enjoying the summer so far. He spends his days watching the chipmunks, deer and always the birds. He's always in search of a errant bug, or "buggy" as I call them to get his attention. He's been great at finding areas in the home to cool off, such as the tile floor, or resting on the brick mantel in the living room. On the 95+ degree days, I did have to get creative and figure out a way for him to stay cool, because it was just too hot in the house at 82 degrees! He's been enjoying the few minutes at night when I air out the house and open a window for him to sit next to and cool off. He's an awesome little kitty, soon to turn one. I just wish he was not so afraid of everyone, but me, but he's the one I chose and I love him to pieces!!

Here are two portraits I took a few nights ago using a strobe and soft box. It was so hard for me to get these images!!! I hoped to get some full body shots, but that was nearly impossible, he was far too intrigued with the light stand. These images are not too bad given how hard it was for him to remain still for even a second!

Oh! I almost forgot to mention his new thing... He's a "talker!" It turns out he's a very vocal kitty.
